More than 100 people with autism, Downs Syndrome and multiple learning disabilities got into the London 2012 spirit with a pre-Olympic event held by new social care organisation Your Choice Barnet.
CommunitySpace – a specialist day resource which provides opportunities for adults with learning disabilities – hosted the event for service users from Your Choice Barnet’s six schemes.
Your Choice Barnet staff members organised events and prizes, and gave the CommunitySpace building in Edgware a Olympic-themed makeover. The service users competed in events like giant Jenga, table tennis, basketball, bowling and Tin Can Alley; a game hitting cans off their pyramid perch with a ball.
Service user Gillian Hynes, said: “I had a fantastic day and won an Olympic bag. I loved Tin Can Alley, and bowling.”
Amanda Jackson, Director of Operations for Your Choice Barnet, said: “The event was a major success with both service users and staff.
“Our service users got to compete, get active and celebrate together along with the rest of the nation. It is difficult for them to access a lot of Olympic events and activities aroundLondonso we thought we’d bring the spirit of the games to them.”
