As far back as the 19th century, a traditional English tea dance involved plenty of refreshments and a band – and last week’s tea dance for Barnet Homes’ sheltered housing residents was no exception!

Held at St Mary’s Church Hall, Hendon, the tea dance invitation was also extended to residents from Almhouse charities, CommunitySpace and the community at large.

It was the perfect opportunity for older people from different charities to meet each other and socialise. Research has shown that getting out and meeting other people plays a vital role in combating loneliness and social isolation in older people.

There was plenty of food, refreshments with live music provided by Simply Swing, who got everyone on their feet dancing and enjoying themselves!

The event was partly funded by money left over from last year’s Dragon’s Den grant which was awarded to Barnet Homes’ Sheltered Housing Team and entry tickets, priced £3.00.

More than 70 residents turned up to the event and plans are already underway to hold another tea dance in the summer.
