Inspite of advances our society has made to support people living with learning disabilities, there are still plenty of myths and misconceptions around employing someone who has a learning disability.
Mencap, who lead on Learning Disability Week (19 – 25 June) say that only 6% of people with a learning disability, known to local authorities, are in paid employment. Mencap wants to raise awareness on the benefits of employing people with a learning disability and help tackle the ‘appalling’ levels of employment for them.
We are delighted to be able to share some positive statistics about the work being done within Your Choice Barnet to support people with learning disabilities into employment.
- 4 YCB Clients have been supported into employment
- 9 are enrolled on volunteering work placements
- An employment/volunteering information event was held at CommunitySpace to help people gain access to employment
- 27 people attended an employment project focus group meeting for adults with disabilities living in Barnet
- 11 service users gained volunteering opportunities through Timebanking UK
- 1 client is receiving job coaching from the access to work fund
There is some amazing work being done in YCB services to give people with learning disabilities the chance to work and lead full lives in our community.
