Together with Age UK Barnet and Wolseley, we’re pleased to be offering free home energy checks for older Barnet residents. These checks can help residents make their homes more energy efficient, something which will be crucial this winter.

Funded by Wolseley, this programme will see Age UK’s handy people visiting homes which residents are struggling to keep warm. They will provide advice on energy saving and retaining heat, as well as fitting free energy-saving equipment such as draft excluders and reflective radiator panels.

Age UK Barnet Chief Executive Helen Newman said: ‘As we get older, it takes us longer to warm up and exposure to cold weather can make you more vulnerable to health problems such as heart attacks or strokes, as well as worsening conditions such as arthritis, asthma and influenza. The government recommends that people over the age of 65 heat their homes to at least 18C. However, the rising cost of fuel means this is often difficult for those on a low income.’

‘We hope that these measures, with help from the Wolseley Group, will go a long way towards helping people over 65 in Barnet stay warm and well during winter.’

Wolseley is the UK’s largest trade specialist in heating, bathroom and plumbing supplies. Rob Eastwood, their National Development Manager for social housing said “Wolseley is pleased to be partnering with Barnet Homes and Age UK Barnet on this Energy Efficiency project, and have a common belief that supporting people ensures strength and longevity of our local communities”=
